Privacy and Your Data
How Onsen protects what you write, where to find everything it holds, and how to lock the app or take your data with you.
Overview
Your privacy matters. Your journal entries, conversations, and personal data are protected with strong security, and everything Onsen holds is somewhere you can go and look at.
Data Encryption
Onsen encrypts your data both in transit (TLS/HTTPS) and at rest (encrypted cloud databases). Your personal information is never sold or shared with third parties — only you and Onsen's AI (for generating responses) have access to your entries and conversations.
Finding Everything Onsen Holds
Settings has a Your Data section that gathers the three things worth checking on:
- Knowledge — what Onsen has learned about you from your writing: the people, places, moods and dates it has picked up. You can rename anything that is wrong and forget anything you would rather it did not keep.
- Shared Entries — who can see your entries and what has been shared with you, with the ability to revoke access at any time.
- Export Data — a copy of everything you have created, as a readable report plus a portable data file. See Export Your Data.
Locking the App
Under App, turn on App Lock to require Face ID, Touch ID, or your fingerprint after a minute of inactivity. Worth having if your journal is the kind of thing you would rather nobody picked up your phone and read.
Deleting Your Account
You can permanently erase your account and everything in it from Settings → the card with your name → Delete Account. Onsen shows you exactly what will go before you confirm. See Deleting Your Account for the full walkthrough.
Tips
- Check Knowledge once in a while — it is the clearest picture of what Onsen actually knows about you, and it is editable.
- Export before any big change — it takes a minute and gives you a readable copy of everything.
- Turn on App Lock if you share a device — it is the difference between private and technically private.
